The Primate’s Palace, the former winter residence of Archbishop Batthyány of Esztergom and today the residence of the Mayor of Bratislava, is one of the most important architectural monuments of Classicism in the city. Thanks to its architectural and artistic qualities, sensitively incorporated into the urban development of the historic core of the city, it is one of the most sought-after landmarks of Bratislava.

Archbishop Batthyány’s emblem on the top of the palace is decorated with a princely cap and a cardinal’s hat, symbolising his position in Hungary and internationally. This emblem weighs approximately 150 kg and measures one metre in width. It depicts a pelican feeding its young with its own meat, symbolising dedication.

The interior of the palace breathes refinement and history. Visitors have access to the Gallery’s exhibition spaces and the unique Hall of Mirrors, and a guided tour will eventually take them to the Archbishop’s glass oratory overlooking the Chapel of St. Ladislaus.

The most valuable artistic exhibit in the Gallery’s exhibition spaces is the only comprehensive collection of six wall tapestries in the world. This is a unique collection from the first half of the 17th century with mythological imagery, created in the royal weaver’s workshop in Mortlake, near London. The tapestries were accidentally discovered in the anteroom of the Hall of Mirrors during restoration works in the early 20th century. Why the tapestries were hidden and how they came to be located in Bratislava are still shrouded in mystery.

The Gallery also houses several smaller pictorial exhibitions – a set of 17th century Dutch and Flemish genre paintings and an exhibition of 16th and 17th century Italian painting.

The attractiveness of the Primate’s Palace is multiplied by the important historical moments in which the palace plays a role, namely the signing of the so-called Peace of Pressburg between the Austrian and French armies in 1805, or the opening ceremony of the Hungarian Diet.
