A new sports hall is being built in Bratislava
28.11.2024
The mayor of Bratislava, in tandem with the mayor of Bratislava’s Nové Mesto district, today announced the start of construction of a completely new, modern and safe sports hall, which will be built in the Nové Mesto district in the coming months. This represents another promise fulfilled by the municipality’s leadership, when, after the inevitable demolition of the old sports hall, a clear commitment was made that a new multi-purpose sports hall would be built at its original location.
“I’ve been saying for a long time that a city that participates in sports is also a happier and healthier city, and I am glad that despite difficult times and difficult financial situation, we are continually able to invest in sports. Proof of this is the construction of a new sports hall in Bratislava’s Nové Mesto, which we promised after the city district lost its original hall due to structural problems. We are fulfilling this promise, and I believe that in the course of the coming year the new hall will serve mainly our children and youth who participate in sports,” said Bratislava mayor Matúš Vallo.
The new sports hall will be built on the site of the original hall, which had stood on Pionierská ulica in Bratislava’s Nové Mesto since 1983.
Unfortunately, a structural assessment showed that it was not possible to save the original building. The ageing sports hall therefore had to cease its operation in the summer of 2022 and was subsequently demolished. The municipality’s leadership promised to build a new, modern and, above all, safe hall in its place, and activities in this regard were initiated in the previous election period by then Deputy Mayor for Sports, Zdenka Zaťovičová. After processing all the necessary documentation, the demanding process of acquiring the necessary permits and holding a tender to procure a contractor, construction work began this week.
“I’m glad that a modern multi-purpose hall is to be built in the Nové Mesto district, which has the most sports areas and sports fields of all the municipalities in Slovakia. The new hall will be slightly expanded compared to the original one and will be over 1000 m2 in area. As before, it will be home to sports such as gymnastics, basketball and volleyball, in addition to two other sports – handball and floorball – for which it will serve as a training site. From my point of view, this will be a unique block of sports facilities concentrated in one place in the middle of a housing estate,” said Nové Mesto mayor Matúš Čupka.
The new hall will contain a multifunctional playground measuring 20X36 metres with a clear height of 8 metres, which is also suitable for organising sports competitions or occasional public events.
The construction of the new sports hall is part of the Programme for the Comprehensive Renovation of the Primary and Secondary Schools, thanks to which the capital has already invested over 10 million in the reconstruction and renovation of several premises for students, teachers and, in this case, also for athletes and their coaches. The construction of the new hall is also co-financed by the Sports Support Fund. Construction work on the new hall should last until the end of summer 2025, after which the building will be handed over for the final approval procedure, so that it can then start serving its purpose as soon as possible.
“I believe that the new sports hall, together with the adjacent outdoor multifunctional playgrounds, will once again become an important spot for sports on the map of Bratislava’s Nové Mesto", concluded Bratislava mayor Matúš Vallo.
