Complex transformation of Harmincova Street enters its final stage

13. 09. 2023

Bratislava, 13 September 2023 – One of the city’s most important transport infrastructure projects is approaching completion in Dúbravka. In a matter of days, drivers will enjoy a new, four-lane road, pedestrians will get new, safer pavements, and improvements will also be made to public transport. The comprehensive transformation of Harmincova Street will significantly improve the daily comfort for drivers and passengers and, thanks to the reconstruction, the residents of Dúbravka, as well as the surrounding districts, will gain a modern and, in particular, a safe road.

The busy Harmincova Street is one of the main access routes to and from Dúbravka. The extension will provide a better connection for the Dúbravka and Karlova Ves districts with the D2 motorway and will simplify access to and from the district as well to the city, as car-drivers will no longer be impeded by buses stopping directly in the lane, which, especially in the morning and afternoon rush hours, made traffic very difficult. The rebuilt road will also decongest a section of Lamačská Road in the direction of Lamač and Záhorská Bystrica.

"The extension of Harmincova Street by two new lanes is an absolutely essential infrastructure project to improve traffic in the city. Its development has extended over four electoral periods. For many years, this project was deemed unfeasible because it required a huge amount of effort and work to settle, buy or swap land. Thanks to the commitment of our city company Metro, as well as the Dúbravka district, our Deputy Mayor Táňa Kratochvílov and colleagues at City Hall, we have succeeded in making it happen. We have settled the land ownership issues, obtained building permits, selected a contractor and now we can deliver a wider, safer road to drivers. I believe that the widened Harmincova will significantly improve the daily comfort not only of drivers, but also of public transport passengers and, thanks to the landscaping, benefit pedestrians as well." says Mayor Vallo.

"In addition, the city is also planning to construct a bike path here. After its implementation, Harmincova Street will become a street with optimal conditions for all modes of transport - pedestrians, cyclists, public transport as well as individual transport", adds Deputy Mayor Tatiana Kratochvílová.

"I am delighted that the Harmincova Street extension is successfully approaching completion. The need for the extension was initiated not only by officials or residents' representatives, but actually by the residents of Dúbravka themselves, which makes me even more happy to see that we have succeeded. The whole process, from land acquisition, design, to implementation, was highly demanding, which is why the cooperation of the city district, the City Councillors for Dúbravka, the city administration and the private sector was essential. I would like to say a big THANK YOU to all of them and I hope that we will continue to work together on other projects that will enhance the quality of life for our residents," says Martin Zaťovič, Dúbravka’s Mayor.

The carriageway on Harmincova Street in Dúbravka was constructed in the 1970s. Its capacity and technical level were years behind the requirements for a modern road. Despite the importance of its strategic location, its condition has not changed and that has made it difficult for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to cross. Planning permission was granted for the extension of Harmincova back in 2007. However, the project was delayed for years due to unsettled land issues adjoining the road. Their purchase was carried out in stages, and the city managed to complete it and acquire all the necessary plots (fourteen in total) in 2019. Subsequently, in the summer of 2022, the transition of the former two-lane road into a four-lane one began.

"One of the main reasons why I got into local politics in Dúbravka back in 2014 was the traffic situation on Harmincova Street. At that time, this traffic issue was regarded as being basically insoluble due to the property relations in the area. There were various dual land-ownerships, inheritance proceedings, or multiple owners scattered all over Europe. These were mostly small plots, but their settlement was necessary in order to widen the road. Currently, this extended road is being handed over to all Dúbravka residents for use, and not only to them. People using this section will save a few minutes every day and over the years it will save days or even weeks. I strongly believe that they can invest the time saved in their family, sport or leisure," explains Juraj Káčer, local MP.

"I am genuinely happy that another of our priorities as City Councillors and Mayor has been successfully completed. I firmly believe that the extension of Harmincova Street will contribute to the improvement of transport in Dúbravka and to the enhancement of the quality of life of its residents," adds Zdenka Zaťovičová, local MP.

The works on the complex reconstruction of the road were divided into three stages. The final completion of the construction is scheduled for 2 November 2023; however, the scheduled finishing works will no longer affect the use of Harmincova Street for individual or public transport. The renovated Harmincova street will have a new road surface, a fully functional four-lane road with two bus lanes in both directions, a new pedestrian crossing with a traffic light and, thanks to the reconstructed pavements with Bratislava tiles, the pedestrians will be safer as well. There will also be new public transport stops with wheelchair access and new shelters. Electronic information boards and ticket machines will be installed. The total cost of the project amounts to €3,611,500.52 incl. VAT.
