Bratislava City Foundation
Support of cultural and community life
Bratislava City Foundation is a new modern and transparent system of support for the city, in the form of grants, which started to operate in 2020. The main mission of Bratislava City Foundation is fulfilment of the public policies of the city in specific areas, where the financing mechanisms of a foundation are common.
Arm’s length principle It is the basic principle we used when we were designing the system. That means, that the trust is in the hands of renown specialists, who are independent of the city and its agencies, and who can judge the best, based on their experience and speciality, the quality of projects.
Support, cultural sustainability, and community life in the city This is the primary focus of Bratislava City Foundation. The Foundation took over from the grant program for support of the culture “Ars Bratislavensis”, which was terminated as of 1 January 2019, by the Decree No. 16/2019 by the Mayor of Bratislava, the Capital of the Slovak Republic.
Advantages compared to the previous program:
- we have increased the budget for the grant program
- streamlined application approval process and introduction of electronic system for grant applications
- systematic support for informal community initiatives as well as individuals in the form of artistic scholarships
How much did the foundation donate in the first few years of work?
Year 2020
In this year, we have donated 579,250€ (out of the total of 600,000€) for cultural and community programmes.
In total, we have received 516 proposal applications, and from those, we have supported 223 projects, based on stated request criteria in each proposal.
Year 2021
The Foundation, in its second year of running, increased the budget by another 100,000€. We have donated a record 700,000€ for the cultural and community programmes. We have received 852 proposal applications, out of which we have supported 211 projects.

Official registration of Bratislava City Foundation
The Bratislava City Foundation (Nadácia mesta Bratislavy) was registered on 15 January 2020 by the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic under the number 203/Na-2002/1224 by the Foundation Charter approved by the Decree of the City Council of the Capital of the Slovak Republic, Bratislava, number 336/2019 on 21 November 2019.
