Climate Plan

Greener and Healthier Bratislava

The Bratislava Climate Plan, formally the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP) of the Capital City of the Slovak Republic, was created in response to the urgent climate challenges we face in our city, in Slovakia, and globally. At the same time, it fulfils the city’s commitment under the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy.

Main Goals of the Climate Plan

The Climate Plan outlines 16 strategic priorities and 65 measures, organized around four key strategic goals:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030 compared to 2005 levels.

  • Prepare Bratislava to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

  • Enhance the city's adaptation to the adverse effects of climate change, including improving crisis management.

  • Strengthen collaboration with citizens and businesses to address climate change.

The plan includes measures to be implemented by the city and municipal organizations to reduce emissions in areas directly under the city's influence (municipal property, waste management, transportation, and climate change adaptation). It also proposes actions for residents and businesses, with Bratislava committed to actively supporting them in these efforts.

  • The City Leads by Example

  • Waste Management and Recycling

  • Sustainable Mobility

  • Residents of Bratislava

  • Responsible Businesses

  • Adaptation to Climate Change

Given the complexity of the Climate Plan, we have identified 10 key measures for the initial years of implementation:

Frequently Asked Questions

How can Bratislava’s city districts contribute to the Climate Plan if they were not involved in its preparation?

Our long-term goal is to create opportunities for all city districts to participate. Petržalka was the first district to be directly involved in the development of the Climate Plan, and we hope others will follow soon. If your district is interested, please contact the Climate Office at [email protected]. We will guide you through the process, help plan your activities, and include you in the coordination and monitoring of the plan.

I have ideas or concerns about the implementation of the Climate Plan. Who can I reach out to?

If you have suggestions or questions about the Climate Plan, please contact the Climate Office directly at [email protected].

How will residents and businesses be involved in implementing the Climate Plan?

For residents, we will aim to make the processes for achieving the plan’s two major goals—reducing energy consumption and installing renewable energy sources—as simple and accessible as possible. Just as the Metropolitan Institute of Bratislava creates manuals for public spaces, we plan to map out, simplify, and standardize processes, as well as provide clear, step-by-step guides for residents.

In 2025, we are launching a program called the Bratislava Mayor's Climate Challenge (BMCC). It is a program of long-term cooperation between the city and companies to reduce their carbon footprint More information can be found in the Climate Challenge tab.
