Collecting containers

For the collection of mixed municipal waste, black plastic collection bins with a capacity of 120 l and 240 l and a container made of galvanised sheet metal or a black plastic bin with a capacity of 1 100 l are standardised in the collection system.

The number and type of collection containers and the collection interval for mixed municipal waste is to be determined on the basis of the registered number of persons and according to the actual waste production.

The cost of the collection bin/container is part of the local charge for municipal waste and minor construction waste, which is borne by OLO a.s.

Underground and semi-underground containers

The property manager may apply to the capital city for consent to use an underground or semi-underground container with a capacity of 3 m3 to 5 m3, subject to the conditions set out in Article 11(2) of Generally Binding Ordinance No. 6/2020 on the management of municipal waste and small construction waste in the territory of the capital of the Slovak Republic, Bratislava, as amended by GBO No. 11/2021.

The construction of the site for underground and semi-underground containers is at the expense of the property manager.

One underground or semi-underground container with a volume of 5 m3 and a removal interval of at least once a week for 200 to 240 persons is established for apartment buildings and other residential buildings. Above the stated number of people, the collection interval, or the number of underground containers, will be adjusted equivalently, while it is also possible to use an underground container with a volume of 3 m3 with a collection interval of once a week for 120 to 140 people.

Compression container

The City will allow the use of a compression container if the property manager meets the following conditions:

  • provide a compression container at their own expense; the type of compression container must correspond to the collection technique of the authorised person,
  • provide appropriate space, in its use or custody, for the siting and handling of the compression container,
  • provide a 400 V electricity supply to the compression container site,
  • Mixed municipal waste will be processed in an incinerator within the territory of the capital city.

The capital city shall assess the compliance with the above conditions and notify the applicant of its opinion on the use of the compression container within 45 days of receipt of the application.

Prior to issuing an opinion, the capital city is to seek the opinion of the relevant borough on the use of the compression container.

Collection, transport and disposal of mixed municipal waste from the compression container is carried out by the company Odvoz a likvidácia odpadu (OLO) a.s. The collection interval is at least 1 time per week, regardless of the size and fullness of the container.

The manager of the following non-residential buildings and other residential buildings may request the use of a compression container:

  • hotels, motels, guesthouses and other short-stay accommodation,
  • buildings for administration and management, for banks and post offices,
  • buildings for trade and services,
  • transport and telecommunications buildings, stations, hangars, depots,
  • industrial buildings and warehouses,
  • buildings for public entertainment,
  • buildings for education, training and research,
  • hospitals, health facilities and social welfare facilities,
  • indoor buildings for sports,
  • other non-residential buildings, e.g., correctional facilities or barracks,
  • other residential buildings, e.g., children's homes, students’ homes, retirement homes and homeless shelters.

The compression container cannot be used for residential buildings, on housing estates, in public spaces without the consent of the owner, land manager.

Cleaning of container sites

Removal of pollution of the site by the municipal waste producers - owners or users of residential buildings - is the responsibility of the administrator, or the community of the residential building. Producers of municipal waste are obliged to deposit municipal waste in containers and collection bins designed for this purpose in such a way that they may be closed and municipal waste does not fall out of them.

The administrator of the residential building can arrange for the removal of large volume waste by OLO TAXI service for a fee. Information about this service can be found at: OLO a.s. ↗︎.
