Facilities and services for seniors

Facilities for the elderly, care facilities and a day care facility

Facilities for seniors and Nursing homes

We can all find ourselves in a situation where we need the help of others due to a worsened health condition or life changes. This dependency is partially covered by social services facilities – retirement homes, care homes, day-care centres and others.

Who provides these services?

Social services in the form of stays for seniors are provided by public and non-public social services providers. You can find their list in the Central Register of Social Services Providers ↗︎.

Social services in the form of stays for handicapped are generally provided by the Bratislava Self-Governing Region ↗︎.

  • Non-public providers provide their social services in more than a dozen retirement homes and in eight care homes in Bratislava.
  • The City of Bratislava has established the following facilities (see their list below):
    • 7 retirement homes;
    • 3 care homes;
    • 1 day-care centre.

Pursuant to Act No. 448/2008 Coll. on social services and on amendment to Act No. 445/1991 Coll. on trade licencing (the Trade Licensing Act), as amended.

Who are the facilities for seniors intended for?

The facilities are intended for retirement age people who are unable to take care of themselves in their homes (due to their deteriorating health condition) and the care service is not sufficient to cover their needs.

  1. The retirement homes provide their social services to: (pursuant to Act No. 448/2008 Coll. on social services and on amendment to Act No. 445/1991 Coll. on trade licence enterprises (the Trade Licence Act), as amended):
  • individuals reaching retirement age and dependent on help from others, with the dependency reaching at least level IV under Annex 3; or
  • individuals reaching retirement age requiring such social services due to other reasons.
  1. The care homes provide their social services:
  • for a specific time to adults who depend on the help of others under Annex 3 of Act No. 448/2008 Coll. on social services, if they cannot be provided with care services (e.g., after their discharge from hospital or in the event of deterioration in their health condition).

Duration of provision of services The social services of the care homes are provided for a definite period of time of up to three months.

  1. The day-care centre provides social services:
  • to individuals dependent on the help of others, if they reach at least Level 3 under Annex 3 of Act No. 448/2008 Coll. on social services and they depend on the social services of the facility for only a specific time of day.

What will I need to access the service?

Applicants to receive services from retirement homes, care homes, or the day-care centre will need:

  1. Assessment and decision on their dependency which requires social services provided by the retirement home, care home, or the day-care centre

The assessment and the decision are drawn up and issued by the local authorities of the city districts of the permanent residence of the applicants (they need to request those in writing).
The application form to assess the dependency can be found on the webpage of the respective city district or at the local authority’s office address.

This applies in the event that the resident seeks to receive social services paid by public budgets from a public social services provider who is the City of Bratislava or a legal entity established by the city.

If you already have the assessment and effective decision, contact the facility (ideally, the director or the manager of social care). You can find their contacts on the webpage of your selected facility.

  1. Application to ensure provision of social services If you have your permanent residence in Bratislava and you have selected your non-public provider of social services in a facility for seniors, you need to file a written application to secure the provision of social services.

If you have your assessment and effective decision and you have selected your facility of social services run by the City of Bratislava, you can contact the facility directly. The employees will provide you with the necessary information. In this case, we recommend you not to file your application with the city, but directly with the provider of the social services. You can find their contact details at the webpage of the facility.

  1. Documents which are used to conclude the agreement
  • Certificate on income (e.g., on pension paid each month)
  • Statutory declaration on property of individuals for the purposes of payment for the social services.

The facilities have their (waiting) lists of people interested in a place there. After receipt of the completed application form, assessment and decision on dependency, the applicant is registered on the list of candidates (released on the webpage of the facility).

Obstacles of access to the services

  1. Full capacity of the city facilities may be an obstacle – meaning that it will take longer to be able to access the services.
  2. In most of the city districts, there is a shortage of retirement homes.
  • Social services of the facility cannot be provided to individuals whose health condition requires institutional healthcare in a medical facility. The retirement homes provide social services in the form of stays all-year round.

How much will I pay?

The fees for accessing social services in city retirement homes, care homes, and the day-care centre are governed by the Generally Binding Ordinance of Bratislava, the Capital of the SR, No. 2/2014 ↗︎ of 24 April 2014 on fees for provision of social services.

The fees of non-public providers of social services in retirement homes, care homes, and in the day-care centre are specified in the pricelists of the providers and depend on the agreement of the parties when concluding the agreement on the provision of social services.
