Metro Bratislava
Resolution No. 563/1997 (dated 26.6.1997) of the Bratislava City Council approved the intention to establish a company for the improvement of the urban public transport system in Bratislava. On 20 November 1997, Metro Bratislava a.s. was incorporated as a joint-stock company. Metro Bratislava has fulfilled its function as a public investor in the public transport system, and in doing the follow-up and supplementary constructions and ensuring their preparation and implementation. The city of Bratislava has been a 100% shareholder.
From the beginning, Metro Bratislava has focused on construction supervision, building construction, transport construction (land-based infrastructure and local roads), rail transport, and brokerage and engineering activities with the exception of selected activities in the construction industry and wholesale and retail activities.
The implementation of engineering activities and construction supervision is carried out by Metro Investing, which is a subsidiary.
In 1998, Bratislava City Hall entrusted the company with investment and organisational activities related to the construction of the fifth Bratislava bridge over the Danube.
In February 2001, with the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications joining the company, Metro Bratislava’s share capital was increased. At present, the shareholders are the city of Bratislava (66%) and the Ministry of Transport, Posts and Telecommunications (34%). The state investment will be used for partially funding the city's development programmes, especially in terms of transport, and will help to reduce the city's budget deficit.
