Bratislava, 2 April 2026 – The capital city has announced the second year of Bez burinky – the citywide Bratislava Front Gardening Championship. The goal is to recognise those citizens of Bratislava who, often for many years, voluntarily and without any compensation, care for their front gardens and by doing so make the capital a better, more beautiful and more fragrant place for everyone.

The city’s management is constantly striving to improve the quality of public spaces because it is a well-known fact that the environment that people live in has a significant impact on how they feel, the relationships they build and how they experience everyday life. And thanks to front gardens, we feel more comfortable and more at home in our city.

Said the mayor of the capital, Matúš Vallo:

“Thanks to the first year of Bez burinky, we were able to see a great deal of human goodness along with the fact that neighbourly relationships can be fulfilling. This is specifically why we are announcing the second year of this popular competition. From now until 30 April you can enter your own front garden, which you take care of with your neighbours, alone or with your community, in the competition. We will, of course, reward the best ones. In addition, we will again see beautiful front gardens and thank the people who have been caring for these public spaces for years, some for even decades. We will once again believe in good interpersonal relationships, because this is what the first year was about, and this is why it was so beautiful and popular."

Every front garden has its own charm and its own story. Therefore, everyone who takes care of their front garden with love is truly a master gardener. This is why the aim of the competition is to bring front gardens to the forefront. At the same time, however, front gardeners are also competing for interesting prizes in the Bratislava Front Gardening Championship. As many as 20 finalists will receive 200 euros. In addition, the winners will receive the following prizes:

  1. place 1000 €
  2. place 750 €
  3. place 500 €

How will the competition take place?

Front gardeners can enter during the course of April at web www.bezburinky.sk ↗︎. The jury will select at most 20 finalists, and the public will then vote on the winners during May and June. They will then be announced at a gala picnic in the Sad Janka Kráľa park, which will be held in mid-June, and at which the jury will also present special awards for special front gardens.

The Bratislava front gardens will be judged by a jury that includes, along with the mayor of the capital, Matúš Vallo, and the head of the Bratislava parks and gardens department, Zuzana Pšenáková, other well-known faces: Slovak actor and presenter Juraj Bača, or perhaps Blue Grandma, the most famous grandmother on social networks. You’ll find the details of the competition at web www.bezburinky.sk ↗︎.

What did last year’s Bratislava Front Gardening Championship look like?

During the first year of Bez burinky in 2025, more than 130 front gardens from all over Bratislava entered. Each was unique, and each was created with ideas and love. The selection was in no way easy, but the jury ultimately selected 20 finalists. The public subsequently got to know these master front gardens through videos and photos published on web www.bezburinky.sk ↗︎ and on the city’s social networks. And the reaction was clear – people fell in love with the front gardens.

The competition helped draw attention to the city’s small green spaces. Front gardeners became positive heroes by turning common days into exceptional ones.

Concluded the Mayor of Bratislava, Matúš Vallo:

“We thank everyone who makes our city more pleasant. We want to show appreciation for it, so we would be pleased if as many front gardeners as possible would register for the Bratislava Front Gardening Championship."
